HF radio conditions

Two numbers from the Sun tell you most of what you need. The solar flux shows how strongly the ionosphere is being ionised, and higher means the upper bands such as 15, 12 and 10 metres are more likely to open. The Kp index shows how disturbed the Earth's magnetic field is. Below 4 is calm. Five or more is a geomagnetic storm, which can wipe out HF.

The band guide is only a rule of thumb. It uses the flux figure alone and does not allow for the time of day, the path, or sporadic E in the summer. If a band sounds busy, believe your ears.
