Visits to museums:
Whenever I visit a museum, I head straight for the radio gear. On these pages are photos of the radio and signals equipment I have found on my travels, along with a little of each museum's history.
Family members have kindly taken photos for me at some museums I have not yet managed to visit myself. Pick a heading below, or see the Site Directory for everything on the site.
Museums in Sussex
- Amberley Museum. Only a short journey from my home, so I often call in for a look round and a coffee in the summer. Photos of the radio station, the telephone exchange and the radio museum. Includes a video and an audio message.
- Tangmere Military Aviation Museum. Near Chichester. Photos of the radio gear on display, including an R1155 and T1154, an AR88, an HRO and RAF wavemeters.
- Wings Aviation Museum. Near Balcombe. My sister-in-law's photos of an R1155 and T1154, a BC348 receiver, and parts of a Lancaster bomber found on Worthing beach.
The Second World War
- Battle of Britain Bunker, RAF Uxbridge. My visit in May 2025 to the underground operations room, 60 feet down, that directed 11 Group's fighters in the Battle of Britain and on D-Day.
- D-Day Museum, Arromanches, and Pegasus Bridge. Photos from Normandy of an 18 set, a 19 set, an R1155 and T1154, and the story of the glider landings at Pegasus Bridge.
- Battle of the Bulge, Bastogne War Museum. Radio and signals equipment from the battle in the Ardennes in the winter of 1944, including an 18 set, an SCR-593, a BC-221 frequency meter and a German Hellschreiber.
Radio sites
- My Isle of Wight trip. The old radar site on the hill behind Ventnor, with its aerials and masts, and the old home of the GB3IW 70cms repeater.
