The battle began on 16 December 1944, when Germany launched a surprise offensive through the Ardennes forests of Belgium and Luxembourg. Hitler hoped to break through Allied lines, capture Antwerp and force the Western Allies into negotiations.
American forces bore the brunt of the initial attack, while British forces helped contain and defeat the offensive. The battle continued into January 1945 and was Germany's last major offensive on the Western Front.
