Bush VHF model 62 radio

Bush VHF62 radio. Walnut cabinet with a gold patterned speaker grille, a black tuning scale with a knob each side and five cream push buttons above the BUSH name

The VHF62 was introduced shortly after the BBC began its VHF/FM service in 1955. FM offered listeners better sound quality and less interference than traditional AM reception.

A magic eye tuning indicator was one of its distinctive features. It’s an EM81 valve, visible through a small window in the upper-right section of the speaker grille. Its green illuminated display changes as you tune a station, helping you obtain a good signal.

The radio uses the following eight valves:

  • ECC85 – VHF tuner
  • ECH81 – AM frequency changer
  • 2 × EF89 – intermediate-frequency amplification
  • EABC80 – detection and audio preamplification
  • EL84 – audio output
  • EZ80 – mains rectifier
  • EM81 – tuning indicator
