Murphy model A212 radio

Murphy A212 radio. Wooden cabinet with a striped speaker cloth above a dark tuning panel, with a volume knob on the left and a tuning knob on the right

The Murphy A212 is a British four-valve table radio introduced in May 1954 by Murphy Radio Ltd of Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.

It is a fine example of post-war British radio engineering, featuring an unusually styled wooden cabinet, a large loudspeaker and reception on long, medium and short waves. The 6P25 output valve drives the large 8-inch speaker. The set uses a conventional AM superheterodyne arrangement with an IF of 470 kHz.

Valves:

  • 6C9: frequency changer (mixer and oscillator)
  • 6F15 or 6F16: intermediate-frequency amplifier
  • 6LD20: detector, AGC and audio amplification
  • 6P25: audio output valve
  • Metal rectifier: HT supply rectification
