Murphy radio model A684

Murphy A684 radio. Wide wooden cabinet with a cream square-mesh speaker grille above a blue tuning panel, a row of cream push buttons, and volume and tuning knobs at each end

The Murphy A684 is a British-made, seven-valve table radio introduced in August 1960 by Murphy Radio Ltd of Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. It was one of Murphy's higher-quality domestic receivers, combining VHF/FM reception with traditional medium and long wavebands.

The A684 was essentially the wooden-cabinet version of the Murphy A674, which had been introduced in June 1960. Both models shared the same basic electronic design.

Valves:

  • 6L12: VHF/FM front-end
  • 6C12: frequency conversion
  • 6F18: intermediate-frequency amplification
  • 6LD12: detection and audio functions
  • 6P15: audio output
  • EZ80: HT mains rectifier
  • EM84: magic-eye tuning indicator

The EM84 tuning indicator is a particularly appealing feature. It produces a green illuminated display that changes as the receiver is tuned to a station.

The 6P15 output valve provides the audio power to drive the loudspeaker system, while the EZ80 supplies the high-tension DC voltage required by the receiver.
