The 18A appeared when radio was still the principal source of home entertainment, news and music. Television was not yet widespread, and a good-quality wireless set was an important household purchase. Pye was one of Britain's leading radio manufacturers, with a reputation for innovative circuitry and attractive cabinet designs.
The 18A features a rounded wooden cabinet with decorative dark inlaid bands, a cream-coloured surround to the loudspeaker and tuning dial, and a striped speaker cloth.
